The media, namely television, has played an important role in the
development of the new generation. Media events become part of the collective memory that bring different people
together and define a culture. Television's immediacy created exact moments. When we all look back at events such as the
Iran Hostage Crisis, the Challenger Explosion, the Gulf War, and the riots in L.A. we all have vivid memories of the
specific time when these occurred. We remember where we were and what we were doing. We remember the images and the
feelings. Some of these moments were so profound that they changed our ways of thinking and changed the way we saw the
world.
